Pares de phrasal verbs con significados opuestos
Muchas veces podemos formar pares de phrasal verbs con significados contrarios. Si asociamos los dos y sus significados, es más fácil acordarnos de ellos en el momento apropiado.
A veces los pares usan el mismo verbo, con una partícula opuesta:
“Could you turn off the TV, please?”
“But I just turned it on!”
turn off (apagar un aparato eléctrico)≠turn on (encender un aparato eléctrico)
Y a veces se utiliza un verbo opuesto con una particula opuesta:
She put the milk in the fridge, and took out the butter.
He took the blue shirt out of the closet and put the black one back in.
put in (poner dentro)≠take out (sacar)
I can drop the package off at the post office before I pick Bob up at the station.
pick up (coger, recoger)≠drop off (dejar algo en un sitio)
She took off her shoes and put on her slippers.
They took the lamp off the table and put it on the floor.
take off (quitar)≠put on (poner una cosa sobre un superficie, o ponerse ropa)
Y por supuesto, a veces dos phrasal verbs parecen ser opuestos, pero no tienen nada que ver el uno con el otro.
She took up jogging to try and lose weight.
Take something up=empezar a hacerlo con regularidad (un pasatiempo)
I’m thinking about taking that picture down.
Take something down=bajar algo de un lugar alto hacia otro más bajo.
Otros pares:
I got up very early this morning. I’m going to lie down on the sofa to rest for a moment.
get up (levantarse)≠lie down (tumbarse)
Every time I turn up the volume on the stereo, he comes back and turns it down.
turn up (subir el volumen)≠turn down (bajar el volumen)
You must stand up when the judge enters the courtroom, and sit down only after he does.
stand up(ponerse de pie)≠sit down (sentarse)
Ten en cuenta que los phrasal verbs no son siempre literales y no siempre tienen pares opuestos.
The plane took off from Madrid at 11 and landed at 4 in Moscow
take off (despegar, un avion)≠land (aterrizar)
