Definition: to die (not a very sentimental way of talking about it.)

Mrs. Jones was the oldest woman on the block. She must have been around 95 when she finally kicked the bucket.

to blow off steam

Definition: to release physical or emotional energy through activity.

I like to go to the gym a couple times a week. It helps me blow off steam.

to let sleeping dogs lie

Definition: to avoid causing problems by not mentioning something.

Her mother told me a lot about her past, but I never said anything to her. I thought I should let sleeping dogs lie.

to let the cat out of the bag

Definition: to tell a secret.

The party was going to be a surprise, but then Alice let the cat out of the bag. 

to lose your shirt

Definition: to lose most or all of your money in gambling or financial transactions.

My uncle invested a lot of money in a company that went out of business, and he lost his shirt.

to mop the floor with somebody

Definition: to defeat someone by a large margin. 

The Germans really mopped the floor with the Portuguese team, didn’t they?
