Phrasal verbs with “up”

La partícula “up” se usa para crear muchos phrasal verbs. Normalmente tienen un significado de movimiento hacia arriba, de empezar o de incrementar.

Movimiento hacia arriba

He always gets up early. (get up = levantarse)

Could you put this up on the shelf? (put up = poner o colocar en un sitio alto)

He looked up and saw the clouds rolling in from the mountains. (look up = mirar hacia arriba)

He hung his jacket up on the hook by the door. (hang up = colgar algo en un sitio alto)

Empezar 

He’s setting up a new business in his hometown. (set up = emprender un negocio)

I want to brush up on my phrasal verbs. (brush up = volver a aprender algo que sabías hacer antes)

She took up jogging because she needed to get some exercise. (take up = empezar una actividad)

Incrementar

If you turn up the volume, you’ll bother the neighbors. (turn up = subir el volumen)

Cheer up! Your haircut looks okay. Not great, but… (cheer up = animarse, incrementar la alegría)

All the prices are going up in the shops. (go up = subir)

Como siempre, algunos tienen más que un significado, y algunos de los significados no parecen tener mucho que ver con la partícula “up”.

He hung up the phone and put it back in his pocket. (hang up = colgar el teléfono)

The Spanish economy is having trouble keeping up with Germany. (keep up = mantener el mismo ritmo)

She made up some story about it… I really don’t believe her. (make up = inventar)

I didn’t know the answer, so I looked it up on wikipedia. (look up = buscar una información)
