Como usar used to
“Used to” más el infinitivo se utiliza en inglés para hablar de algo que pasó varias veces en el pasado, o que pasó durante largo tiempo. En todo caso, se refiere a algo que ya no es verdad o no pasa.
Puede traducirse como solía, o como el pretérito imperfecto.
I used to go to Manchester every summer, but now I go to Liverpool.
(Solía ir a Manchester, iba a Manchester cada verano.)
My parents used to live in Denver, but now they live in Las Vegas.
(Mis padres vivían en Denver.)
She used to work in a bank, but now she works in a bar.
He used to have a lot of hair, but now he’s bald.
I used to like sweets, but now I never eat them.
Para hacer la negación, usamos “didn’t use to,” quitando la “d” de “used.” Así puede implicar que algo no ocurría en el pasado, pero ahora sí.
He didn’t use to listen to classical music, but now he loves it.
We didn’t use to spend so much money when we travelled, because we never used to stay in hotels.
David didn’t use to go out much, but now he goes out all the time.
Si queremos negar que hacíamos algo en el pasado, podemos usar “never.”
I never used to be married, and I certainly never used to live in Brooklyn!
Las preguntas se hacen con “Did you/he/she/etc use to…” otra vez quitando la “d” al “used.”
Did you use to go to California every summer?
Where did you use to go?
When did you use to get up in the morning?
How did you use to get to work?
